Plant spirits, Amazonianism, and the tourist gaze in ayahuasca culture: how spiritual expectations shape visions, healing, and ideas about Amazonian shamanism

Plant spirits and Amazonian shamanism are often filtered through outsider expectations that treat Indigenous cosmologies as mystical consumables. Ayahuasca tourism can reinforce an Amazonianist gaze in which visitors arrive with ready-made ideas about jungle wisdom, spirit beings, healing, and authenticity, then interpret intense experiences through those expectations. Those expectations shape what people believe they encounter in ceremony, including visions of plant teachers, moral lessons, and a sense of contact with nonhuman intelligences. Indigenous practices and beliefs can be simplified into marketable symbols, while local diversity, historical change, and unequal power relations are pushed aside. Ethical engagement requires more than spiritual fascination. Respect for Amazonian traditions depends on recognizing cultural context, avoiding romantic projection, and questioning how tourism, commerce, and Western desire influence the meanings attached to ayahuasca and plant spirits.
